Welcome to St. Therese Catholic Church!

October 18, 2018

St. Therese Catholic Church, as a happy faith community, welcomes you with joyful hearts to our church.  Celebrate the gift of life with us, whether newly arrived or longtime registered.

If you are not registered and want to belong to this happy family of worshipers, please stop after mass by the church hall or the parish office to pick up a registration form or call us at:  (865) 457-4073.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN OCTOBER: Stay up to date by clicking here to see what’s happening this month at St. Therese Church.

ALTAR SERVER TRAINING: The first altar server training session will be Oct. 20 and 21 after each Mass for all current servers and anyone interested in serving. These sessions, led by Deacon Dan, will have as many training sessions as needed to go a bit more in depth covering the why, what, and how of altar serving.  If you have children who currently serve, please bring them to these sessions to brush up on the roles altar servers have at each Mass. This will be a great time to learn and/or review certain procedures.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS: October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. St. Therese Church is sponsoring a diocesan-wide Domestic Violence Program 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23.  Guest speaker Marilyn Hafner, Volunteer Lay Chaplain for the Family Justice Center in Knoxville, will be discussing the services they offer as far as a safe haven and counseling for all ages. At the end of the presentation, there will be time for questions and answers. Refreshments will be served.

SECOND COLLECTION: There will be a second collection this weekend (Oct. 20-21), and we will celebrate World Mission Sunday. Pope Francis invites the entire Church to support the mission dioceses in Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands, and parts of Latin America and Europe, where priests, religious, and lay leaders serve the world’s most vulnerable communities. Please keep the Pope’s missions in your prayers, and be generous in next week’s collection for the Society for the Propagation of the Faith.

CCW NEWS:  CCW will be selling coupons after Mass Oct. 20-21 and Oct. 27-28 for the Belk Charity Sale 6-10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3. Please support them by purchasing a coupon for $5.00. You will receive a $5.00 coupon to use at the store during the sale.

VIRTUS TRAINING: St. Therese will hold its first Virtus Training in the parish hall 12-3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27.  Anyone who deals with children in any capacity — even ushering, etc. — must have this training.  If you are behind on your bulletins, decide if it would be easier to take the Virtus Training and start new or go back to make up the training bulletins. Go online to register at the Virtus.org site. Scroll down until you see St. Therese.  Please contact the office or Cathy Hundley if you have problems with the registration.

SOCIAL ACTION: Social Action Committee will be collecting baby items such as diapers and wipes for the month of October (Respect for Life). Please put the items in the Food Pantry Box in the parish hall. They will also be collecting winter coats from now until February. Coats donated until Nov. 2 will be donated to KARM for the “Coats for the Cold” campaign. Coats donated after that will be given to the Anderson County Community Action Commission.

MINISTRY WEEKEND: Please stop by after Nov. 3-4 Masses for refreshments and to chat with the representatives of the major committees and organizations of our vibrant parish life! They will be available to answer questions about activities and volunteer opportunities.  Prayerfully consider volunteering for one or more ministries for only a one-year commitment.

MASS INTENTIONS: There are dates available for Mass Intentions for the remainder of 2018 as well as 2019.  Call now or stop by the office to request a specific date.

SECOND COLLECTION: There will be a second collection for Response to Hurricanes Florence and Michael and other Disasters. On Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 3 and 4, the Diocese of Knoxville will take up a second collection for disaster relief for victims of Hurricanes Florence and Michael. Funds will be used in response to Hurricanes Florence and Michael as well as for any other natural disasters that occur this year. Funds will assist the ongoing efforts of Catholic Charities USA to provide humanitarian aid for the immediate help of those in need in the affected areas, as well as to the long-term efforts to restore communities after such widespread destruction.

FIRST WEEKEND FELLOWSHIP: The sign-up sheet for First Weekend Fellowship is up on the wall next to the kitchen. Host families or groups set up drinks and food, and help clean up after the event. This is a fun and easy way to support your parish, and all expenses are reimbursed.

4TH QUARTER MINISTRIES LIST: If you are an usher, altar server, lector, or Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, you should have received your emailed copy of the ministry schedule for October through December. If you did not receive it via email, please call the parish office with your correct email address or click here to view it online. There are a few printed copies available in the parish hall by the sign-in book. If you are unable to keep your scheduled times, please remember to find a substitute to replace you. Thank you.

NEW! YOUTH GROUP : Reminder! St. Therese Church is forming a youth group for 6th through 12th grade students in our parish.  Our loose focus is on faith formation beyond Confirmation.  What youth group will look like, the activities we will do, and when we meet will be determined by and with the group of young people involved. We will be joining with the Confirmation class for our first gathering on Sunday, Oct. 28, from 4:30-6:30. There will be food, music, games, prayer, and discussion. If you have questions, please contact the parish office.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION: This week, Faith Formation class for our younger students meets on Wednesday, Oct. 24, in the parish hall. Supper will be served at 6:15, and classes are 6:45-8 p.m. Our Decision Point classes for Confirmation will meet Sunday, Oct. 28, in the rectory. For more information and all our documents, click the Youth News tab above or find the calendar here.

RCIA NEWS: The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a process that provides information about Catholic beliefs, how to live a Catholic life, and will, if desired, lead to becoming a member of the Catholic Church. RCIA meets at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesdays until the end of Easter. Anyone desiring to join the RCIA sessions for this year please contact the parish office or David or Linda McCune at (865) 457-5015.

SEMINARIAN SUPPORT: Please remember to pray for the dedicated men who are studying for the priesthood this year. Stop by and pick up a Seminarian support form in the parish hall to show your support, and commit to praying for them, sending them encouraging letters, or support with a financial gift and get to know our Seminarians!  Their photos and address information are on the bulletin board.

BULLETIN ADVERTISING: The parish bulletin currently has space available for three advertisements. If you have a business or know of someone who has a business that they would like to advertise in our bulletin, have them stop by the parish office for pricing or call 457-4073.

VIRTUS REQUIREMENTS: The Diocese of Knoxville is conducting the annual audit of the Virtus Program.  All parish volunteers are expected to turn in a copy of their updated VIRTUS online training reports before the end of June.  Just the one page showing your live training, training bulletins, and online training modules is sufficient, either email or bring to the office as soon as possible.  Thank you to all those that have sent in your reports!

The Social Action Committee has changed the way it is collecting items for the Food Pantry. Each month, the committee will focus on a different need so as to supply the food pantry with high-demand items.

GRIEF SUPPORT MINISTRY: We have a grief support ministry to visit the sick and be with the dying and to help members who are grieving. Call the parish office or Joanne Anderson 865-809-1837 if you would like to join this support group.

SCRIPTURE PROGRAM: All are invited to attend the Scripture Program, which meets at 7 p.m. Thursdays in the parish hall (and continues throughout the summer months). This weekly program on Thursday nights is open to everyone. Participants will read the upcoming Sunday readings and then have some discussion questions afterward. A sign-up sheet is in the parish hall. For more information, contact Pete or Jean Chiaro.

SOCIAL ACTION: On the second Monday of every month, several local restaurants will donate a portion of their sales to support Aid to Distressed Families of Appalachian Counties (ADFAC). Launched in 2013, “Dine and Donate” is a year-long event, with different restaurant participants each month.

FOOD CITY GIFT CARDS: Be sure to use these gift cards when shopping and purchasing gas. They make great gift ideas as well. They can be purchased after every Mass on Saturday and Sunday. They are also available 8 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Monday-Thursday at the parish office.
